In 1939, IK. T. Itkonen established Ravintola Kannas at the junction of Eerikinkatu and Köydenpunojankatu. Named after his hometown, it quickly became a hub for sailors, stevedores, and other workers from the bustling Hietalahti port. The isthmus location provided a convivial atmosphere, with patrons enjoying not only food and drink but also the company of locals.
By the 1970s, however, the restaurant’s popularity waned as the seafaring clientele diminished. Despite this decline, memories lingered of a time when white tablecloths adorned the tables, and hearty home-cooked meals were served.
In the 1980s, Ravintola Kannas saw a resurgence with the arrival of the live music association Elmu and the Radio City crew. Settling nearby in Lepakkuola, they injected new life into the restaurant, attracting a diverse crowd with their vibrant performances.
